Frequently asked questions
Everything you might wonder about MEKET: how it works, what someone who scans your QR sees, how we protect your data and which plan suits you. If you can't find your answer, email us at hola@meketid.com.
What MEKET is and how it works
What is MEKET?
MEKET is an app you can use on your phone, tablet and computer that gives you a personal QR code with the information someone who finds you in an emergency would need: your contacts, your most important medical details or how to return a lost item to you. You carry that QR with you — on your helmet, backpack, keyring, wristband or your dog's collar — and anyone can scan it with their phone camera to see, instantly, whatever you've chosen to show. It's designed for the moment you can't speak for yourself: an accident while training alone, an older person who is disoriented, a child who has become separated from their family or a lost pet.
How does the QR work? Does the person scanning it need to install anything?
No. The person scanning only needs their phone camera: they don't have to download an app, create an account or sign up. Scanning opens your emergency profile in their browser, showing the details you've marked as visible. The QR always points to your up-to-date profile, so what they see is always the latest version of your details.
Does it need an internet connection?
Yes. The person scanning needs an internet connection on their phone to load the profile. That's what keeps the information always up to date: if you change a phone number, anyone who scans afterwards will see the new one. There's no offline mode at the moment.
If I change a detail, do I have to print a new QR?
No. The QR doesn't contain your data: it's a link to your profile. If you change a phone number, a medication or an emergency contact, the change is immediate and the same QR you already carry will show the new information. There's nothing to reprint or re-engrave.
Why isn't MEKET in the app stores?
MEKET is an app you can use on your phone, tablet and computer, but you don't need to download it from any store: it opens in your browser at app.meketid.com. If you want it to hand like any other app, you can add it to your phone's home screen straight from the browser. That way it doesn't depend on any store, updates itself and works the same on Android, iPhone and computer. Setting up your profile takes about five minutes.
Does it work in any country, and which languages is it in?
It works in any country: all it takes is for the person scanning to have a phone with a connection. The app is available in nine languages: Spanish, Catalan, English, French, Italian, Galician, Basque, German and Portuguese. The profile the scanner sees is shown in the language you chose in your profile. The text you write yourself (allergies, medication, notes) appears exactly as you wrote it, with no automatic translation; if you travel, it's a good idea to write it so it can be understood abroad.
Privacy and security
What details does someone who scans my QR see?
Only the ones you mark as visible. Each detail has its own switch: you can show your emergency contacts and blood type and hide, for example, your medication. Your passport number is always private by default. We recommend a short, clear profile: whatever changes how you're treated (drug allergies, conditions such as diabetes or epilepsy, anticoagulants) and who to call. Your home address isn't needed: whoever finds you needs to know who to contact, not where you live.
Where is my data stored and who can see it?
Your data is stored encrypted on servers in the European Union, in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). MEKET doesn't sell or share your data with anyone. Apart from what you mark as visible on your emergency profile, nobody else can see your information. Full details are in the privacy policy, linked in the website footer.
Who finds out when my QR is scanned? Is the location shared?
With MEKET+ and MEKET Family, every time someone scans your QR, you and your emergency contacts are notified by email, and also by a push notification on the phone of anyone who has the app installed with notifications turned on. The person scanning is asked whether they want to share their location: if they agree, the alert includes the exact spot on the map; if not, an approximate location (the city). Location is never collected behind anyone's back. The person scanning remains anonymous: we don't ask them for any details. With MEKET Essential there are no scan alerts.
Does MEKET track the person like a GPS?
No. MEKET doesn't track anyone, isn't an active locator and doesn't alert you if someone leaves an area. What it does is solve the moment when someone has already found the person (or the animal, or the item) and doesn't know who they are or who to contact. If continuous tracking is needed, for example for some people with cognitive impairment, a GPS watch or device is the right complement.
What do I do if I lose the wristband, keyring or holder with my QR?
You deactivate it from the app straight away and the code stops working: anyone who scans it will no longer see your details. You can then activate a new QR linked to the same profile, without having to fill anything in again.
Your account security
Is the app secure? How do you protect my account?
Security has been built in from the start, because MEKET stores medical details and emergency contacts. All communication is encrypted (HTTPS) and data is stored encrypted on servers in the European Union. Each account can only read and change its own data: that rule is enforced by the database itself, not just the app. We also limit repeated attempts to log in or change sensitive details, log you out automatically after a period of inactivity and email you about any important change to your account. We review security regularly.
Can I turn on two-step verification?
Yes, and we recommend it. From Security you can turn on two-step verification with an authenticator app (for example Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or 1Password). From then on, to log in you'll need your password and a six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. So even if someone knew your password, they couldn't get into your account.
What are the password requirements?
At least 10 characters, including at least one number and one special character. Passwords that have appeared in known data breaches on other websites aren't accepted either. We recommend using a password you don't use anywhere else, or a password manager.
Will you let me know if something changes on my account?
Yes. We send you an email when your password is changed, when the account email address is changed and when two-step verification is turned off. If you get one of these alerts and it wasn't you, email us straight away at hola@meketid.com.
Does the session log out on its own?
Yes. If the app is left open and unused for 10 minutes, you're logged out automatically, so nobody can see your details on a phone or computer you've left unlocked. Also, when you tap "Sign out" you're logged out of all your devices at once, and any temporarily stored data is deleted from the device.
Can someone guess or copy my QR?
Each QR carries a long, random code that's impossible to guess by trying combinations. If someone copies or photographs your QR, they'll only see the same as anyone who scans it: what you've marked as visible. If you want to invalidate it, from Security you can regenerate your digital QR (the old one stops working instantly) or deactivate a specific physical holder without affecting the others.
Does my emergency profile show up on Google?
No. Emergency profiles are marked so that search engines don't index them, and they can only be reached by scanning the QR or using their exact link, which is long and random.
Do you store data about people who scan my QR?
The minimum needed for alerts to work and to prevent abuse: when it was scanned and, if the person agrees, where from. We don't ask for or store their name or phone number, and their IP address isn't stored as is, but converted into an encrypted fingerprint that doesn't reveal who they are.
Could someone send me fake alerts or a fake location?
We've put limits in place so it isn't worth trying: a location is only accepted from the same phone that opened the profile and within the following few minutes, the same scanner can't trigger repeated alerts, and there's a maximum number of alerts per profile per hour. That way, a real emergency with several people helping still sends alerts, but nobody can flood your inbox with fake ones.
Do you store my card details?
No. Payments are processed by Stripe, one of the most widely used payment platforms in the world. MEKET never sees or stores your card number.
How is my health data protected?
Health data is a special category under the GDPR, so we only process it with your explicit consent, which you give when you create your profile and which is recorded. You choose, detail by detail, which ones appear on your emergency profile; the ones you don't mark as visible never leave your account. If we update the privacy policy, we ask for your consent again before you carry on.
How is children's data protected?
A child's profile can only be created and managed by the adult holder of a MEKET Family account, who decides what is shown. When needed, we ask for verification from the parent or guardian by email. Profile photos go through automatic review and, if there's any doubt, are checked by a person.
Where are photos stored and who can see them?
In private storage, not in a public folder. When a photo is shown on the emergency profile, it's served through a temporary link that expires, and only if you've chosen to show it. If you turn off public visibility for the photo, it stops being visible instantly.
What happens to my data if I close my account?
When you close your account, your account, your profiles and their data are deleted, and your QR codes stop showing any information. If you had a subscription, it's cancelled first, so you aren't charged again. You'll receive an email confirming the closure: if you didn't request it, email us straight away.
What do I do if I think someone has got into my account?
Change your password from Security, turn on two-step verification and log out: that logs you out on all devices. If there are details on your profile you don't recognise, correct them and email us at hola@meketid.com so we can look into it with you.
How are profile photos protected?
Uploaded photos are automatically reviewed by an artificial intelligence system before they're published, to check that they meet the terms of service and to protect children. If a photo raises any doubt, a person reviews it; if it's rejected, you can ask for a human review. Photos aren't used to train artificial intelligence models. You decide whether or not the photo is shown on your emergency profile.
Who at MEKET can access my data?
Only the administration team, when it's needed to give you support or maintain the service. That access requires mandatory two-step verification and is logged. MEKET doesn't sell or share your data with anyone.
Plans and pricing
How much does it cost? Is there a free version?
Yes. MEKET Essential is free and doesn't ask for a card: it includes the account holder's profile, the emergency QR and detail-by-detail privacy. MEKET+ costs €9.99 a year (less than €1 a month) and MEKET Family €19.99 a year. These are fixed prices, VAT included.
What's the difference between MEKET Essential, MEKET+ and MEKET Family?
MEKET Essential (free): the account holder only, with an emergency QR and detail-by-detail privacy; no photo, no traveller mode and no scan alerts. MEKET+ (€9.99/year): the account holder and, at most, one pet; adds a photo, traveller mode and scan alerts. It's individual: it doesn't allow another adult, children or items. MEKET Family (€19.99/year): up to 10 profiles in a single account, with a maximum of 4 adults; the rest can be children, pets and items. Includes a photo, traveller mode and scan alerts.
How do I pay and how does it renew?
You pay from the app by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link or Revolut Pay. The subscription renews automatically every year; before it renews, we let you know by email and in the app.
What happens if I cancel or downgrade?
You can cancel whenever you like from your account, in the payment portal. You keep your plan until the end of the paid period and then move to MEKET Essential. If you downgrade, profiles that don't fit in the new plan are locked and kept for 30 days (we let you know 7 days before deleting them); if you upgrade again before then, they're restored. When you move to Essential, only the account holder's profile is kept; from Family to MEKET+, the account holder and the oldest pet.
Can I add my partner or another adult?
Not on MEKET+, because it's individual. To have more than one adult on the same account, the plan you need is MEKET Family (up to 4 adults). The other option is for that person to create their own account, free with MEKET Essential or with their own MEKET+.
Physical holders
Where can I carry the QR?
Anywhere that whoever finds you can see it and scan it without having to search through your things: on your helmet, on your hydration vest or backpack, on a wristband, on your keyring, on a pendant, sewn onto your clothes, on your dog's collar or on your suitcase. What matters is that it's always with you and can be seen at a glance.
Do you sell wristbands, keyrings or stickers?
Physical holders aren't on sale yet. In the meantime, you can download your QR from the app as an image or as a print-ready PDF and carry it on whatever you prefer: a laminated sticker, a tag, a card in your wallet. If you're interested in MEKET holders, email us at hola@meketid.com and we'll let you know when they're available. For businesses, clubs or bulk orders, also contact hola@meketid.com.
Older people and Alzheimer's
How can MEKET help if a relative with Alzheimer's gets lost?
A person with cognitive impairment often can't say who they are or who to call. If they carry a MEKET QR, whoever finds them — a neighbour, a pharmacist, a police officer — scans it and sees within seconds the name they usually go by, family phone numbers with their relationship ("Ana · daughter"), the medical information that changes how they should be treated (diagnosis, critical medication, allergies) and any instructions you've written, such as "responds best to Ramón" or "don't raise your voice, call number 1 first". With MEKET+ or Family, you also get an alert when someone scans the QR, with the location if the person scanning shares it.
Where is it best for an older person to carry the QR?
Wherever they'll always have it without thinking: a comfortable wristband they won't take off, a pendant under their clothes, a patch sewn onto the jacket they wear every day or their keyring if they always go out with their keys. The best holder is the one that doesn't get forgotten or taken off, not the most sophisticated one.
Who manages an older person's profile?
You can manage it for them from your account with MEKET Family, which allows up to 4 adults. Otherwise, each adult can create their own account, free with MEKET Essential.
Children
Who manages a child's profile, and what happens when they turn 18?
Children's profiles are part of MEKET Family. They're created and managed by the adult account holder, who decides what is shown on the QR. The child doesn't need an account or a phone. Date of birth is required: when they turn 18, at the next renewal the profile becomes an adult profile if there's room left in the Family plan (maximum 4 adults); if not, we let the account holder know.
Sport, mountains and travel
I go running, cycling or into the mountains alone: what should I put on my QR?
Whatever answers the three questions the person who finds you will ask, in this order: who you are, who to contact and what a medic needs to know before touching you. In other words: your full name, one to three contacts who will actually pick up the phone (with their relationship to you), blood type, drug allergies, conditions that change the care you need (diabetes, epilepsy, pacemaker, anticoagulation, severe asthma) and your regular medication. Carry it where it can be seen without anyone having to search you: helmet, vest or backpack, wristband or race bib. A short, up-to-date profile is more useful than a complete but messy one.
Why isn't my phone, or my phone's medical ID, enough?
In an emergency your phone may be locked, out of battery or in a pocket, and your phone's medical ID only helps if whoever is looking after you knows it exists and how to open it. Anyone can read the MEKET QR with any phone, without needing to touch yours.
What does traveller mode include?
Traveller mode (MEKET+ and MEKET Family) adds useful details for when you're away from home: passport (always private), travel insurance, embassy in your destination country, European Health Insurance Card and languages you speak.
Pets and items
My dog is already microchipped: why would I need a QR?
Because the chip needs a reader at a vet clinic or animal shelter, during opening hours, and the registry details need to be up to date. Anyone can read the QR with their phone on the spot, even on a Saturday night out in the countryside: they'll see your phone number, the animal's name and any instructions you've left. It doesn't replace the chip, which is mandatory and is the official identification: they complement each other.
What should my dog's tag say?
The minimum: the dog's name, a phone number you almost always answer and the note "I'm microchipped". What it shouldn't include: your address. An engraved tag has little space; a QR alongside it adds more contacts (if you don't pick up, there's a plan B), medical conditions or medication, instructions ("he's nervous, don't chase him") and the usual vet, and it can be updated without re-engraving anything.
What does the pet profile include?
Name, species, breed, microchip, pet passport, vaccinations, usual vet, allergies, medication and the owner's contact details. It works for any animal. With MEKET+ you can have one pet; with MEKET Family, several.
Does it work for suitcases, bikes or other items?
Yes, with MEKET Family. The item profile (bike, scooter, suitcase, instrument, camera…) includes a description, brand, serial number, your contact details and a message for whoever finds it; you can also say whether you're offering a reward. Whoever finds it contacts you directly, with no middlemen.
Businesses, sports clubs and contact
Is there a version for businesses or sports clubs?
Yes: MEKET Team, designed for businesses and sports clubs that want every worker or athlete to carry their emergency ID, for example on their vest, helmet or kit. For more information, email us at hola@meketid.com.
How do I contact MEKET?
By email, at hola@meketid.com. We reply within 48 hours.
